1st gen avalons with cloth seats would be such a great commuter.
current gen Malibu looks great
R-class is an concentrated turd that was squeezed out of a cheap die...it also had one really good engine.

2000's Daytona Prototypes
Non-CART IndyCars from 1996 to 2017.
They look kind of ok on their own, but if you look up CART Champ Cars of the same era, they get blown away.

Even that. If you get a minivan it should either be a Dodge/Chrysler or a Honda. And I can’t get excited about the Dodge until the inevitable Chrysler Pacifihawk is released.

Maybe this will sound ‘exotic’ to your American and Canadian ears, but I die a little whenever I see a Smart ForFour, a ForTwo, a Peugeot 307, a Peugeot 206+ and pretty much any type of newer VW (mostly Golfs, I f*cking hate them).

Yeah those Avalons are great for when you have given up on life.

I put the Kia Soul on the list.
I mean, I know they’re great for older people with mobility issues that need something easy to park, because they can’t judge space as well anymore, so they serve an important purpose. But, just not for me. If someone I knew bought one, I’d have to fake interest.

The Chevy Aveo Sonic.
I wasn’t even aware that they had gotten a facelift until this year’s Chicago Auto Show.
It’s not like I hate it or anything, it’s probably a solid cheap car...it just does nothing for me.

Basically any FWD based subcompact SUV/CUV a few examples aren’t pictured but let’s just say the whole segment. The Renegade might be an exception. Crosstrek not included because that’s essentially a RWD based system.

Nah, I think there are much better options while still maintaining comfort. I rented an ats for the Moto gp race and thought that car was great. Cts v sport would be mega too.

I tried to get excited about an Avalon once. No really, we were at the dealer and looked at it seriously. It’s fine, but I just couldn’t do it.
My BIL, on the other hand, had an old Avalon that he loved and finally sold it. Then, he missed it so much he bought it back.

The latest BMW whatever. I never learned to tell BMWs apart, and there’s so many of them now that I feel like I’ll never catch up. I mean, I know an M1 when I see it, but the rest are too similar. Same goes for Audi. I recognize the R8 and the older TTs, but holy crap they really went crazy with the whole corporate grille thing.
German automakers in general have been really good about keeping a consistent design language from generation to generation, and I do appreciate a model being a clear descendant of it previous generation. But when different models look like each other, it’s just taking it too far IMO.
![]() 04/24/2018 at 18:26 |

The facelifted So is at least decent to look at, but yeah it’s an akward compromise between a small SUV and a tall hatch without the benefits of either. No AWD and poor fuel economy. That’s a lose lose

My BIL, the one of the precious Avalon, gets up early every time he stays with us, washes and hand-waxes our cars (before the sun makes it too hot), and takes them out to fill the tanks. He is my favorite BIL.
He is an unrepentant Toyota fanboy. Me not so much.

They ride way better too. Pretty sure there’s ox carts out there that are smoother than an Escape.

As Sonic driver I...
...don’t blame you.
The refresh pretty much ruined it, taking away any uniqueness it’s styling had. They also ditched the close-ratio manual transmission and funky gauge cluster. It didn’t get GM’s new DI turbo either, which made it clear the car wasn’t coming back before they ever announced it.
It was a really solid effort when it debuted, even class leading in a couple areas, but they just didn’t invest in it and it was quickly overshadowed.

Hahaha. I had to check the title of your post to make sure it wasn’t cars we also forgot about. Can pretend I’m excited about it if I can’t remember it exists. I think I tend to classify them as Subaru’s since I see more of the BRZ variant.

“Hinged doors. Not a minivan.”, says every owner of some random SUV/CUV/XUV/whateverUV.
Truth is that they’re all minivans, except with less utility, with very few exceptions.

Nissan Rogue (including my wife’s).
Secret admiration? Avalon’s. Rode in one. Loved it for the comfort, and the v6 will get up and go. Something magical about big comfy cars that you can steer with one finger. Harkens back to my youth driving big American cars.

I don’t know. I think the current generation Soul is one of the best small “SUV” packages I’ve seen, between being cheap and practical. It’s a car that’s perfect for a huge percentage of drivers, many of which wouldn’t touch it for reasons that have nothing to do with the vehicle itself.
Kind of like the xB, only better.
It’s the car that wins people that need cheap/reliable/practical transportation over when I am like, “let’s go look at the perfect car for you”, then we look at a Fit and they really like it, then I tell them to keep an open mind and we go look at a Soul. They buy the Soul.

![]() 04/24/2018 at 19:08 |

My problem with them is that they are pretty terrible cars. I mean, GM still thinks it’s 1995 and builds their shitboxes accordingly, but prices them like they’re competitive. I haven’t seen a new car with that many acres of hard plastic since the Clinton Administration.

![]() 04/24/2018 at 19:32 |

A motorcycle gauge cluster that’s made of cheap shiny plastic with visible flashing everywhere and holes that fill with dust... I got one as a rental with dark swirls in that plastic, like nobody even cared enough to ensure the plastic they were making it from was properly mixed.

What do you get out of arguing? The Avalon is a boring car from how I see it. If I’m after luxury I’ll get something more exciting and still luxurious. If those two examples are the difference between being financially secure and not then neither car is an advisable purchase.
![]() 04/24/2018 at 21:13 |
|
I was going to ask you the same thing. If you don’t like it great but “giving up on life” as a reply to my comment is both argumentative and unimaginative. Not sure how long you’ve been here but maybe a refresh of rule 1 might be worth looking at.
![]() 04/24/2018 at 21:16 |
|
No, it was meant in the generic you form not directed towards you personally, you made personal attacks. Furthermore, I just posted up cars I felt that are boring or I don’t really care about. You chose to reply and begin arguing with me.
![]() 04/24/2018 at 21:26 |
|
If that’s truly the case you need to be less careless in your remarks as they were, on the face of it, argumentative. I can tell you how it looks from my end. I can see that you’ve not been here that long so I’m happy to cut you some slack. Take this for what it is and realize that Oppo doesn’t really do shitting on different people’s tastes and opinions. If you can square that you and I won’t have any problems, if you can’t, your tenure here as an author might be short.
![]() 04/24/2018 at 21:33 |

You do realize you started arguing with me, don’t you?
![]() 04/24/2018 at 21:36 |

Did... Did you not read what I wrote?
![]() 04/24/2018 at 21:38 |

Yes, I get it. I’m not trying to shit on anybody’s opinion. Just asking if you realize that.
![]() 04/24/2018 at 21:44 |
|
Hell, if you read below on my other posts I say it’s great that people are enthusiastic about that car even if I think it’s boring. Somebody put up some pictures of a car that I really didn’t think looked good, but then put up others that did and I said so. I’m going to stop pursuing this, but please ask me for clarification if you think I’m making a direct attack on somebody. I try to refrain from that on here, avoid politics, etc. I understand you’re trying to keep things civil, so I was definitely taken aback with those very personal attacks.
![]() 04/24/2018 at 21:59 |
|
I think we can both step back and be done with this. Realize that what you felt was a very personal attack was a mirror of a comment I felt was an attack directed personally. If we can square up on that I think we’ll have met eye to eye on this issue and we can drop it.
Its also important to note that good comments don’t exonerate bad ones. Just make sure your intentions are clear so as to avoid this problem going forward.
![]() 04/24/2018 at 23:11 |

I dunno. I have my tuned 135i for weekends, but my daily Avalon is fun in a boaty cheap car kind of way. It just rolls around and because it cost 1 grand, I don’t care about it at all. I legitimately enjoy it.
And this is coming from a guy that despised Toyota his whole life.
I think a competent commuter car like a mid level bmw etc is more boring because they just work in any situation, unphased.
![]() 04/24/2018 at 23:21 |

I can’t tell BMWs apart, or Mercedes-Benzes. Partially because they can’t give the goddamn things proper fucking names.
I only recently figured out Volkswagens, because I fucking have one, but it helps they have proper fucking names.
![]() 04/24/2018 at 23:46 |

I just do not give a fuck about Porsche 911s, especially the air-cooled ones. I don’t give a fuck about most BMWs. And I really don’t give a fuck about Corvettes.
I can appreciate hot-rodded versions of those cars, but they’re not my cup of tea.
![]() 04/24/2018 at 23:49 |

Yeah, once upon a time I had a crap van that I just didn’t care about and it was great for that. I left it unlocked and never thought twice about it. Still, if I saw another one of those on the road I never double take or say “Damn, I really miss that!”. There’s a coolness in the nonchalantmobile but by that very definition I find it boring. That’s my take and not meant to take away anything from anybody who has a deep profound love of that car.

Haha yeah that too. The alphanumeric game is best left to chassis/platform codes for internal use by automakers (and for us car nerds). But for the general public, these cars need to have real names.
